When to send it

Tax practices send this when a new client signs on, before the first return. It establishes who is filing, a spouse if they are married, each dependent with their date of birth and relationship, and a photo ID.

It also asks for the last two years of returns and any letters from the IRS or the state, because carryovers, prior elections and open notices all start from what was filed before.

Tips

Getting it back complete

  • Always ask for the prior two years’ returns. Carryforwards and depreciation schedules start there.
  • Ask for any notices from the IRS or the state up front. Finding one in March is worse.
  • Collect each dependent’s date of birth and relationship now, while the client has the details on hand.
  • Ask for a photo ID as part of intake, not at signing.
