Who uses it

When to send it

Planners send this after a client signs on and before the plan is drafted. Most of it is documents rather than questions, because statements and policies answer more precisely than anybody’s memory of them.

It ends with the two questions that shape the plan: when the client would like to be able to retire, and what they most want the plan to help with.

Tips

Getting it back complete

  • Ask for documents rather than figures wherever you can. A pay stub is more accurate than “about ninety a year”.
  • Group the request the way the client keeps their papers: work, accounts, insurance, estate. It reads as less work.
  • Ask for the Social Security statement from ssa.gov. It takes a client five minutes and gives you their earnings record.
  • Leave the goals open-ended. What a client writes in their own words is often the most useful line on the page.
