Your record with a firm

Signing in with a code to see what a firm sent you, what you sent them, and what is still waiting.

A firm that sends you forms through Cartenda keeps a record of what has passed between you: what they sent you, what you sent them, and anything they are still waiting on. You can open that record any time. You do not need an account, a password or an app.

Open the link at the bottom of any email the firm sent you through Cartenda. The thank-you page you see after sending a form has the same link, and so does the bottom of a form sent to you by name. If you have none of those, go to cartenda.com and choose Client sign-in at the bottom of the page. Type your email address and tap Email me a code. If that is the address the firm has for you, a code arrives in your inbox. Type it in and tap Sign in.

The page says the same thing whether or not it recognizes the address. That is deliberate: it stops a stranger from finding out who a firm's clients are by guessing addresses. If no code arrives, check that you used the address the firm writes to.

The code only works for a few minutes, and only once. Your visit ends by itself after a while if you stop using the page. On a shared computer, tap Sign out when you are done.

If the firm only has your cell phone number, the portal can't sign you in. Ask the firm to add your email address, or to send you your files directly.

What you see

Waiting on you lists every request the firm still needs from you. Tap Continue to open one and carry on where you left off.

Everything so far is the whole record, newest first. Each entry says which way it went:

To narrow the list, tap You sent or Sent to you above it. Tap Everything to see it all again.

Kept for you appears when the firm keeps documents for you in a vault, such as your will or your trust. They stay there until the firm removes them. Tap a file's name to download it. A file that reads Being checked opens once it has passed a malware check. One that reads Could not be checked didn't pass the check and won't open, for you or the firm: if you or someone else in your client group added it, whoever added it can send it to them another way, and if the firm added it, ask them for another copy. If the firm lets you, tap Add files to put documents of your own in the vault, or choose one from Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive with the buttons beside it, and the firm is told.

A vault is shared. If the firm keeps one for you and a spouse or business partner, everyone the firm lets in sees the same files there, and the firm decides who that is.

What you will not see

If you work with more than one firm

Each firm keeps its own record with you, and they are never mixed. Tap Your other firms to see Your firms, then choose one.

The menu under your email address, at the top of every page, lists the same places and has Sign out.

If you work at a firm that uses Cartenda yourself, that page and the menu also list Firms you work at. Your own firm is a separate sign-in with your password. The portal code does not open it. If a firm has invited you to work there, it is listed under Invitations.

If you want a firm of your own

Being a firm's client doesn't stop you from using Cartenda for your own clients. Choose Start a firm of your own in the menu or at the bottom of Your firms. It is a separate account, and your record as a client stays as it is.

If you signed up by mistake

If you made an account when you only wanted to see what a firm sent you, you don't need it. After you confirm your email address, the welcome page names the firm and offers to take you to your record with them and remove the firm you just made.

Still stuck? The quickest help is from the firm that sent it, whose contact details are at the bottom of the form they sent you.
